Landscape and climate

With 99,14 km2 Sylt is the 4th biggest island in Germany. Although Sylt isn’t really big, the northernmost island has a very diverse nature and landscape. Rough breakwater in the west and silent tideland in the east. Ethnic dunes and green banks. Bloomy heath and majestic cliffs. The Wadden Sea is also a World Heritage Site and is one of the most significant nature monuments of the world. The island is famous for the beautiful health resorts like, Westerland, Kampen and Wenningstedt and also for the almost 40km long west beach. In addition the North Sea Island is famous for is the omnipresent campaign air, by which the residents mean the typical North Sea breeze, which includes a lot of minerals and salt water. So a walk on the beach becomes a health trip.

Sport island Sylt

The North Sea is a perfect area for all water athletes. Experienced wind or kitesurfer can train in the rough of the west, which is a big challenge. Those who prefer more relaxed conditions can train in the east, where the sea is calm. Sylt hosts not only the Mercedes-Benz Windsurf World Cup, which attract thousands of people, but also some surfing and kite schools which help beginners to do their first steps on the board and also prospective sailors can make their first steps at the coasts of Sylt. Next to the many possibilities on the water, Sylt offers lot of other sportive activities. Whether running, walking, biking or riding, Sylt is big enough. With a route system of 220km, the “Nordic Walking Park Sylt” is one of the biggest areas of its kind in Germany. If you want to take the bike, you can use a track of 200km. With four 18-hole-parks, Sylt become a paradise for golfers.

Family island Sylt Sylt

With the wide choice of activities for children and adults, Sylt established as a family-friendly island. Beside the sea and the beach, which offers enough possibilities by itself, the North Sea Island can come up with a lot of more options for recreational activities. In the summer, the InselCircus pitch a tent in Wenningstedt and presents a multifaceted program. Ship cruises to seal banks, mudflat hiking tours or visit in the experience center “Naturgewalten” and the aquarium in Westerland, makes fun and science come together and offers old and young exiting information about the sea. The Mercedes-Benz Windsurf World Cup for sure is another highlight for the whole family.

Gourmet island Sylt

Whether a casual beach bistro or an exclusive gourmet restaurant, gourmets are spoilt for choice. With more than 200 restaurants, Sylt offers a big gastronomic variety and frequency. Very popular are the regional products like fresh seafood and special herbs. Oysters from List, herbs from Morsum and mussels from the North Sea. The Sylter cuisine is famous in the whole country and all in all four restaurants are awarded with a Michelin star.
